1. Look Beyond the Headline Exchange Rate

Converting a foreign salary into your home currency using a spot exchange rate only tells part of the story. You must evaluate whether the compensation is quoted monthly or annually, whether income taxes and social contributions are deducted at source, and what mandatory employer benefits are included.

For example, offers in the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia are typically quoted as monthly tax-free base pay plus housing and transport allowances, whereas offers in Germany, the UK, and Canada are quoted as annual gross salary with public healthcare and pension contributions.

  • Confirm the pay period (Hourly, Monthly, or Annual) and ISO currency code (USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD, AED, SAR, SGD, INR, PKR).
  • Account for statutory pension/superannuation (e.g., 11.5% Super in Australia, 8% holiday allowance in the Netherlands).
  • Compare local rent and transit expenses in the target city before accepting a relocation package.
